Frank Mir's Mental Game

The former heavyweight champ talks about his mental preparation for his fight versus Shane Carwin, and a possible bout versus Brock Lesnar.

Henderson, Nevada- As UFC 111 approaches Frank Mir looks at the fight against Shane Carwin as one step closer to the ultimate goal of reclaiming his title from Brock Lesnar. As we talked to Mir, he showed he was preparing himself for the fight on every level. From strength training at Philippi Sports Institute, to Muay Thai training, through to his mental game, Frank Mir will be ready for the match.

Mir is unlike most fighters. He understands the value of the mental game. He spoke about his respect for Diego Sanchez after the BJ Penn fight, for Sanchez’s willingness to keep fighting even though it was obvious to most he was not going to win. “It’s not in every situation that you are going to come out a winner. How many people go into a fight saying ‘forget it, I don’t care if I’m going to get my a$@ beat.’”

Frank Mir pointed out, however, that it takes more than intensity and strength to win. He shared some of his philosophy with us. There is a Samurai proverb of two Samurais that met at a river bank. The first shows his strength by jumping the width of the river. The other shows his intelligence by walking a short distance to a man with a boat and pays him to take him safely across. The lesson, according to Mir, “Don’t spend your life trying to find something that you could buy for a nickel.”

So many fighters spend so much time training for strength in an attempt to compensate for their mental game. Frank Mir compared these fighters to a lumberjack who breaks their axe and out of frustration starts pounding on the tree with a sledge hammer. It may eventually bring the tree down, but why not find a sharp rock that can actually cut into it?

Every chance Mir has to get into Brock Lesnar’s head, he will do it. That is why he wants to do his best to destroy every opponent he faces until he can face his rival and reclaim his title. Right now, the only one in his way is Shane Carwin.

UFC 111 will be another opportunity for Frank Mir to show what he is capable of. If he has another showing like that against Cheick Kongo, it will send another strong message to Lesnar.

The fight will be held on March 27, 2010 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Another Great Race

Johnson Rock Hard Presents put on another great race at Bootleg Canyon this past weekend. Skeletal Metal was on hand to present awards to racers that went big on predesignated terrain features.

On the Super-D course the car gap at the end of the first run and the drop-in from the Boy Scout onto Skyline for the second run were the obstacles. We were totally impressed with how big so many racers went. After all was said and done Erik Nelson from Flagstaff, AZ threw a nice table over the car gap and was the only rider to take air into the nasty, off-camber entrance to Skyline.
Erik finished the race in 3rd in the Pro class. The the rest of the podium belonged to Bootleg local Scott Johnson and Sedona's Chewy Aitken. You can see the rest of the results at BluefirePictures.

The downhill race was held 12/20 and was intense. The talent pool was deep and the course was technical. Pros made their way down Poop Shoot on the second run, which was one of the sponsored Skeletal Metal features. The other was the 10 foot roller at the top of the course.

Every competitor really put it on the line and the Skeletal Medal winner was St. George, UT's Logan Binggeli. Logan crossed it up as much as he could on the 10 foot roller and had the smoothest run down Poop Shoot of the day.

Worthy of mention however, is Troy D'Elia. Troy threw a mind blowing air off the second rock section of Poop Shoot. I actually lost my mind watching him barrel down the upper section and then air out the bottom section before heading into the tight turn at the bottom. Went sent Troy home with the Skeletal Metal Rolling Skull Tee in recognition of his awesome run down Poop Shoot.

Logan came in 3rd and missed 2nd by only 2 seconds. The rest of the podium was rounded out with David KlaasenVanOorschot (David K) in first and Mitch Ropelato in second. You can get full results at www.bluefirepictures.com.

UFC 107 Frank Mir vs. Cheick Kongo

Frank Mir is getting ready to make a statement at UFC 107 on 12/12/09. He had a lot to say about the upcoming match during the Countdown show 12/9/09.

This will be a UFC to remember. Frank Mir has a lot to prove after a devastating loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 100. However, having been to one of Mir's workouts at the Philippi Sports Institute there is no doubt Cheick Kongo is not going to be fighting the same Frank Mir that was at UFC 100.

According to Mark Philippi, Frank Mir has added about 25 lbs. His workouts have been brutal with an emphasis on building muscle for fighting endurance and power. Mir's leg workouts have built a solid platform to strike from and his upper body has never looked stronger.

Screamin' Santa Double Down Mountain Bike Race

Johnson Rock Hard Presents is throwing another awesome Downhill and Super-D event. Keep your calendars open for December 19th and 20th. It will be a two run, two event format. Prizes go to the best combined times.

Here are the details:

Date: Dec. 19th - 20th

Location: Bootleg Canyon, Boulder City, NV

Events:
Super-D (Saturday, Dec. 19th)
Downhill (Sunday, Dec. 20th).
Both events will be a two run format. Each run will be down a different course. One course will be smooth and flowing and the other will be technical and rough. Best combined time wins.

Practice: Dec. 18th, Unofficial practice day. Shuttle will be ready to carry Super-D (SD) and Downhill (DH) racers for $20 all day.

Entry Fee: $60 one race / $110 both races

We had a great weekend at Skeletal Metal. First the BMX Team flew to Orlando for the final stop of the Dew Tour, the PlayStation Pro. TJ Ellis, Anthony Napolitan, Cam White, and Cory Nastazio all had a good showing. Nate Berkheimer was injured in practice and was not able to participate in the rest of the event.

Meanwhile back in the Las Vegas area we were at the BT Bittersweet Downhill and Super-D put on by Johnson Rock Hard Presents. This was the first annual event in honor of Brent Thomson, one of the original trail blazers at Bootleg Canyon. Brent Thomson passed away of a heart attack earlier this year. He was a great advocate for mountain biking in Southern Nevada.

Skeletal Metal was proud to support the event, and appreciate all of the work that Francine Johnson put in to make the event a success. There were a variety of amatuers and professionals at the event. The courses truely highlighted what makes Bootleg Canyon such a great place to ride.

We honored a racer in both the Super-D and Downhill categories for going hard, even if they didn't make it to the podium. Waylon Smith took home a ReconRing and ReconBracelet gift set to recognize his sprint on foot down the course to get to the top of the speed trap where he made a go for the top speed record for the day on the Super-D course.

Jackie Harmony took home the Skeletal Metal award for Downhill in recognition for setting the fastest course time for women and the second fastest top speed on the course. She was awarded a ReconRing THIN and ReconBracelet THIN gift set.

Salt Lake City Dew Tour Toyota Challenge

Skeletal Metal had a great weekend at the Salt Lake City stop of the 2009 Dew Tour. Everyone put together solid runs with Cam White and TJ Ellis landing in 2nd and 3rd respectively going into the finals.

The finals definitely showed how strong everyone on the tour is. Cam White had three good runs with a couple strong 720's, 360 tailwhips, and a couple nice backflip variations. Cam finished the night in 4th.

TJ Ellis put together some of the sickest runs of the evening including a front-flip tailwhip that sent the audience and all the other pros into a frenzy. TJ finished the night in 2nd. Ryan Nyquist put together three solid technical runs to put him in 1st.

Stephen Murray Bar Benefit @ Rockhouse Bar Las Vegas 9/23/09 7pm-11pm

Skeletal Metal is teaming up with Rockhouse Bar Las Vegas to throw a benefit party for the Stephen Murray Family Foundation. The event will be Wednesday, September 23rd from 7pm-11pm.

If you don't already know Stephen Murray's story you need to get familiar. In 2001-2002 Stephen was at the top of the BMX Dirt world. He won BMX Dirt Gold at the Gravity Games both years and Gold at the X-Games in 2001. He was nominated for BMX rider of the year by ESPN. Murray made double backflips look easy and was known for his other backflip combinations.

In 2007 Stephen Murray suffered what some have called the worst wreck in BMX history. The crash left Stephen paralyzed from the shoulders down. My words can't do the actual story justice. Cam sent us a good update on how he's doing and getting ready for the Salt Lake City stop of the Dew Tour. Here is the update, straight from the man, no changes. Thanks Cam-

"hey guys, been so busy for me lately so its been a minute since my last update, but here it is.well since I got the epidural injection in my spine a couple of weeks ago, my back has started tofeel really good. It’s been that long since my back has had this pain free movement I hadforgotten how good it actually feels to be healthy. I started riding again, I was a bit hesitant at first because Iwas worried that my pain would come back and I would be back to being hurt. It was such acrappy injury limiting so much so the last thing I wanted was to be back there. I had a couple of chillsessions in the yard and it held up really good, so last wednesday I went to woodward for the daywith nate. This was the first big session I had on my bike in ages. I got tired pretty quick due tobeing unfit, but everything felt great on my bike. The next day I was pretty sore and tender butthat was all over not just my back. Since then ive been riding every morning, having sweet assessions because the weather is great out here this time of year except for the last 2 days with this crappywind, but hopefully that blows out soon!
Ive also had my mates Rob, Megan and Bairdy over here visiting from Australia, and before thenMy mum and sister as well. its been a good time having everyone here visiting and travelling toutah and san diego and getting our chill on.

Next thing on my list is the Salt Lake City Dew stop, I’m excited cause as of today (touch wood)this will be my first comp all year with out any injuries. so hopefully its a good one and this lack oftime on my bike doesnt effect me. Either way its gonna be heaps of fun cause salt lake is always thebest stop so I’m excited. The drawings of the jumps look awesome, lets hope there big and fast,just like I like em.

Well thats pretty much all I have for this update, thanks heaps Doc for helping out and getting myback dialled in.. stoked."

TJ Lavin Interview with Fuel TV

At the last Dew Tour stop in Portland, OR; TJ Lavin sat down with Fuel TV and talked about his career, his music and Skeletal Metal. TJ pretty much summed up what Skeletal Metal is all about. Had a good workout with Frank Mir today at the Philippi Sports Institute in Las Vegas, NV (http://www.philippisportsinstitute.com/). More pictures to come. Coming back from his recent loss against UFC Heavywight champion Brock Lesnar, Mir doesn't appear to have lost his focus to become the best. During the work out Mark Philippi asked Frank if he still wants to be number one. Mir's reply was simple, "It's not something I want to do, it's something I have to do."

Mir had a tough workout and turely showed he has not only the determination, but the focus to stay on top of his game. He didn't mention any rumors of upcoming fights, but there could certainly be something on the horizon considering the work out he put in today.
